Bella Ramsey, widely known for roles in Game of Thrones and The Last of Us, recently shared the discovery of an autism diagnosis while filming in Canada. Bella opened up about the experiences with sensory sensitivities and social interactions, describing how the diagnosis has been a liberating experience.

During production for the second season of The Last of Us, a crew member with an autistic daughter suspected Ramsey might also be on the autism spectrum, prompting a formal psychiatric evaluation, ultimately leading to a diagnosis.

As a child, Ramsey recalled often feeling out of place at school, finding more solace in the company of adults. Heightened sensory issues, particularly an acute awareness of micro-expressions and body language were also pronounced. Filming in cold climates has presented additional challenges, as the heavy waterproof gear and thermals felt overwhelming, as if it was “too much stuff on my body.”

Despite these struggles, the twenty-one-year-old Ramsey explained how autism and acting have become deeply connected, helping to refine a craft through careful observation and structured routines.

The diagnosis for the up-and-coming star has been profoundly freeing, allowing for additional self-compassion. Sharing a diagnosis has also helped Bella to “unmask immediately,” embracing authenticity without feeling the need to hide.

“My experience of moving through the world is as an autistic person,” Ramsey said. “There’s no reason for people not to know.”

“The Last of Us,” Season 2, premieres April 13 on HBO and Max.
